Welcome to SouthernWind Farm

Our farms history:

My family has been farming in Nebraska since my Great Great Grandparents moved here (sometime in the late 1800s). My Grandfather and Father  purchased the land and began what is now being called “SouthernWind Farm”.  For most of its 30 plus years, it has been dedicated to producing field corn, soybeans,  a small amount of prairie hay; with the occasional livestock. The farm itself is just over 350 acres of irrigated tillable land with about another 40 acres available for hay.  In 2016, my husband and I came home to help usher our small farm into the next generation of ownership. We, as a family, decided to give it a name. “SouthernWind Farm” fit the bill! The wind always seems to blow out of the south and my husband is also from the Florida (a Southerner!).

The next step for our farm was to begin diversifying. Our first year back was dedicated to learning how to farm here. Jimmy and I learned all we could about our soil types, took classes on various farm related topics, and with guidance from our family dove head first into our first corn and soybean harvest. We were successful in our first year but decided the land needed some rejuvenation to keep it productive for many years to come. This next year we are going to still plant the crops that my family began with many years ago, but we are also including malting barley and winter wheat into the rotation. My husband and I brought back livestock to the farm. In late 2016, we retrofitted an old hog barn to house four Icelandic sheep. We are looking forward to the meat, wool and, in the future, milk and cheese that these beautiful creatures will supply us. Chickens also came to live at the farm. Five layers were placed in a spruced up chicken shed that is located on the property. With all the changes that are being made to my family’s farm, we still keep in mind where we came from and where we are striving to be for the future generations of farmers in our family.
